The Alternative Birth Care Unit is located near, but separate from Labor and Delivery. We keep medical equipment, some medications and IVs in the Unit should they become necessary.

Cesarean section is immediately available in Labor and Delivery under emergency situations. Patients needing additional assistance are quickly and safely escorted to the Labor and Delivery Unit, located near the Alternative Birth Care Unit.

Due to the unpredictable nature of childbirth, a room in the Alternative Birth Care Unit may not be available upon your arrival to the hospital. In the event this occurs, a similar experience will be offered to you in the Labor & Delivery Unit which has comfortable LDR (labor, delivery, and recovery) suites.

An AquaDoula portable tub is available for rent that can be set up in the Labor & Delivery Unit for any client. It is stored in the midwive’s call room. Please request it beforehand by calling Bonnie Miller at (H)313-538-7222 (C) 313-590-1283 or email at ‘bonniedoula@gmail.com’. Set up and cleaning instructions are included. The clients that would benefit include : VBAC clients; women risked out of ABC Unit due to: BMI, past due date, didn’t pass the NST test, overflow from ABC Unit, low platelets or unable to receive an Epidural.
